Indigo De Souza | Queen from the Carolina's

Writer: brittdigsvinylbrittdigsvinyl

If you haven't yet heard of Indigo De Souza-I recommend starting off light and mellow with her hit from 2021 "Hold U" (video above). Over the years her sound's changed slightly but I love each and every transformation she brings to the table, allowing us to build off-of what we already know about her.

She hits hard on topics like depression, loss, anxiety, bitterness- and love. Brilliantly wrapping up dark and vulnerable lyrics within a happy radio-like digestible beat. But be forewarned- this is so much better than anything on the radio, including Taylor Swift. Bet me on it.

The second I start to stream her, I'm transported into another moment in time. A place I'm unsure if I've ever been before-or whether I made it up in my mind entirely.

I'm rollerblading down a concrete path in a park, somewhere near a babbling river...somewhere under an overcast sky. There's only two more wandering souls in this park, an elderly gentleman pinching off pieces of bread to give to the geese nearby him- and a younger girl clear on the other side of the fields (about high school age) writing steadily in her journal at the top of the stairs-of an otherwise empty ramada.

As I try to focus in on more detail of either, my blade nicks the edge of the pavement and I gasp for a moment as I gather my balance to reconnect and get centered. I'm neither the old man, nor the young girl- having the lack of wisdom to stay focused on my side of the street...but also enough experience to know moments (like catching strangers in moments of harmony) are far too fleeting and far between.

I find myself breathing slower and adjusting my blading maneuver into more of a glide than a flux as I reflect on a million and one analogies that both connect us and distinguish ourselves from each other.

This is where Indigo puts me mentally.

In a place where I'm alone with my thoughts, left to observe, and allowed to connect with others along the same journalistic journey (should I choose to). That's sort of what it feels like to me- listening to music with a duplicate you from 10 years prior wondering if she caught that same lyric you just did- or how the future you would pause on this dope chorus you can't get enough of.

In a more literal world, I can envision us chatting about our previous experiences with boys, men and women alike...while inhaling the smoke from the swisher we continuously pass to one another. Like with Nicki Nicole...as well as Samia, outside of the artist, outside of the fame-Indigo makes me feel like she actually sees me.

I feel like a grade schooler standing in line at the Scholastic book fair ready to get my fill since it's officially April 28th & I've been streaming 'All Of This Will End' all morning.

Before this today's release-I'd been going overboard streaming all three available singles from the album...my two favorite of those being "You Can Be Mean" and "Smog". Not really Frankie Cosmos, not really The Donnas...something fresh, exclusive feeling, and from what I'm hearing so far-unexampled by anyone else. Dare I say "Yeah Yeah-esque" at times.

Although "You Can Be Mean" was my favorite track when listening, "Smog" is by far my favorite of the two videos.

The video actually makes me wish their was a national ritual for getting cherry slurpees past midnight. I think the world would start seeing things in a little brighter color.

Being released on Blood Orange and Crimson Vinyl Variants, I look forward to plucking this into my basket next time I see it in store. I couldn't be more contended to have come across another stellar standout artist making their way up the ladder in 2023. Show her some love, and head over to her site here.

Plus, don't forget to check out her 2018 album "I Love My Mom" that features some really great tracks like 'How I Get Myself Killed' and 'Take Off Ur Pants'. Probably my favorite album so far of hers while I wait for this release to settle in.

Do you remember the last time an artist make you do a double take after having a lyric hit? With all the riffs and bridges that flow through me- I wish that- those goosebumps never stop signaling my spirit.

Are you subscribed to the Vinyl Diggers Digest? What's your take on the release?!
